Staying Sane on Social Media
As I scroll through Instagram, I am amazed at how social media has engulfed so much of our industry. It is a bit overwhelming for me most of the time, and quite honestly, I scroll with caution when checking my pages. Having a social media presence is considered a business must these days, and it is a preferred mode of communication for lots of consumers. But you have to be careful. It’s easy to lose sight of reality and what matters most on social media, and you can really fall into a destructive trap of comparing yourself to others. Here are a few tips on how to stay sane:
Post It, Leave It, and Other Helpful Advice
Create your post, schedule it, and then let it go. Avoid constantly checking in on the app to see who is commenting or if your post is racking up likes. Need a little help pulling back on social media? Use a timer to help you limit time on your social platforms. Try to only follow accounts that inspire you, avoid triggering sites (for me its news sites) that upset your spirit and swiftly unfollow accounts that upset you or make you feel less about yourself.
Do UNTO others!
Remember the Golden Rule and do unto others. Be kind/professional when engaging with others and avoid spaces that bring out the worse in you. Leave comments on post that resonate with your brand, like pictures that inspire you, and share interesting posts with others.
Be Consistent
Consistency is everything. Don’t be afraid to place boundaries around social media. It can be done and there are definitely other ways to get your brands message out to the world. The key to pulling back is being consistent with your boundaries. Be firm in your commitment not to spend too much time scrolling. Look into other creative ways to engage with others and develop specific goals to help you stay focused with your social media efforts.
